How to use the team generator
Use this page as the operating manual for Fair Team Maker: participant list, split mode, Generate teams, warnings, rerolls, copy/print, and pair preview.
Workflow
- Paste or type every participant who should be assigned. The name counter updates; you need at least two names to enable Generate teams.
- Select split mode and set Teams or Target team size. The tool knows whether to fix squad count or derive count from desired size.
- Press Generate teams. Team cards appear with member lists and an optional warning when sizes cannot be perfectly even.
- Press Reroll team on one card if captains agree only that group should change. Replacement members are drawn from the pool excluding names already on other teams.
- Press Reroll all for a completely new shuffle with the same settings. Every team membership changes while participant text stays as typed.
- Copy teams or Print for captains, coaches, or classroom boards. Formatted text is ready to share from this device—nothing syncs to league software.
Worked examples
- Pickup soccer eleven into three squads: Paste eleven names, choose Number of teams = 3, generate, and read the 4/4/3 warning before kickoff.
- Workshop tables of four: Switch to Team size, set Target team size to 4, generate, and print the layout for table tents.
- Partner preview without changing roster: Open Pair generator in Options and press Regenerate pairs to preview partners; the Participants list stays unchanged.
Before you roll
Enter one name per line under Participants in Options (or the main textarea on desktop layouts). Ampersand pair lines may expand into separate names on load.
Choose Number of teams or Team size under Split mode—the control label changes with your choice.
Read any uneven-size warning before sending people to corners of the room or field.
Remember: assignment is random by name only; captains may still swap players manually after the draw.
If something looks wrong
If Generate teams is disabled, add at least two non-empty lines to Participants.
If team count max looks low, you cannot create more teams than participants—adjust expectations or remove absent names.
If reroll errors appear, ensure the full participant list still includes everyone assigned elsewhere.
If an old result reloads on a shared computer, paste a fresh list and regenerate before class starts.
Mobile and keyboard notes
Show options exposes the Participants textarea on phones when focus mode hides the sidebar.
Generate teams and Reroll all sit on the main stage for quick reshuffles.
Team cards expose Reroll team buttons you can activate with keyboard or touch.
Live region text announces generation outcomes including warning snippets.
